Distinguished Teacher Joshua Looy

What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?

New special education teachers need to get a classroom management system that works in place. They should be fair, consistent, and forgiving. Then find the people on campus who can help you the most (i.e. principals, vice principals, counselors, other teachers and classified staff) and keep them happy! They will make life very easy or very hard. You can't do what you need to do without them.

What's the best thing about teaching?

The best thing about teaching is getting to help the students who really need the help and hearing about their success after my class. It might only be one or two a year, but if they begin to achieve through all the struggles they face in life, it is all worth it to me!
