Distinguished Teacher Carleen Aldrich

What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?

Students aren't just what you see in front of you, they have a life outside of the classroom that directly affects how they perform in school. In special education, we still have the opportunity to get to know each student and their families individually. Using this personal knowledge will help you understand how to reach each student. There are no bad kids, just bad behaviors that we have been given the opportunity to help change.

What's the best thing about teaching?

Middle school is difficult, especially for a child with a learning disability. Making a connection with a child, seeing that child become more confident and learn to respect himself/herself as an individual is the best thing about my job!
