Mathematics and Science Teacher (MaST)
In May 2005, the Office of the Chancellor of the California State University set forth a goal for the CSU to double the number of math and science teachers that it credentials by 2010. This effort is to try to compensate for the critical shortage of K-12 mathematics and science teachers that plagues the State and the Nation. Each CSU campus is committed to a specific plan based on regional needs and characteristics that identifies a numerical goal for increased production of credentialed math and science teachers and specifies how it will be reached.
The CSU Channel Islands Mathematics and Science Teacher (MaST) Initiative was created to respond to the growing need for mathematics and science teachers in Ventura County. The CSUCI MaST Initiative is a collaborative partnership of local middle schools, high schools, community colleges, Universities, math and science related industries, and the U.S. Military. We plan to meet the educational needs of Ventura County in mathematics and science by achieving the following objectives:
- Increase interest among K-12 students in pursuing mathematics and science in higher education
- Enhance the mathematics and science competence of K-12 students
- Increase the number of mathematics and science students entering teacher preparation programs, especially at CSUCI
- Support current middle school and high school mathematics and science teachers in Ventura County.
The MaST Initiative is currently funded by grant monies from the CSU Chancellor’s Office and the Boeing Foundation. These grants provide financial aid to students pursuing preliminary teacher credentials in the areas of mathematics or science and the necessary support for the above objectives.
