Distinguished Teacher Wayne Raymond

What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?

The first year or two of teaching can be very difficult, I encourage new teachers to lean heavily on their more experienced colleagues. Do not get too discouraged, New Teacher...it gets easier with practice. Remember to enjoy your students, and connect with them personally. You have the honor and privilege to help guide them in their development.

What's the best thing about teaching?

The best thing about teaching is when a student comes back years after leaving your class, to tell you that your teaching made a difference in their life. That, and the sudden realization that I get around March or April each year, when I see that my students that early in the year struggled with the scientific thinking now routinely can rationally approach and solve problems that are far beyond what they could have handled at the beginning of the school year.
