What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?
Do it! It is the most rewarding job! My biggest piece of advice is to get a mentor right away, either through your district--or with technology these days--anywhere in the world! Find someone who does what you want to do, is the type of teacher you want to be, and ask them for help and support And keep asking until someone emphatically says "YES OF COURSE!"
What's the best thing about teaching?
The absolute best part of my job is when I am contacted by a parent that I have been working with for a little while who excitedly tells me their child's little tiny successes that day. When a parent is truly excited about things that others may take for granted, like a child learning how to use pronouns or a baby's first sign, I know that their kid will be okay. Parent involvement is the primary indicator of student success, period!
