Distinguished Teacher Eric Johnson

What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?

This is a tough, time intensive, but very rewarding career. This is a career where the more you give, the more you get in return. This return won't be in the form of a financial incentive, but in the form of gratification and appreciation. And, it may not even be immediate, but it happens. You must be patient when no one else is. You are often reminding yourself that Rome was not built in a day.

What's the best thing about teaching?

Once you have developed your curriculum and have your classroom in order, it's the extracurricular activities that keep you energized. Whether you are a coach, club advisor, or tutoring after school, you get to work with kids who want to be there. They want to be pushed; they want to excel; they are a blessing to work with.
