Distinguished Teacher Jack Ellis

What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?

The best piece of advice I could give a new teacher is to know your subject matter like the back of your hand. Being organized is very important because there are distractions every day, and it is important to stay as focused as possible on your goals and objectives. Be flexible because sometimes the students bring up a point you have not thought of and it can be fun to pursue the point. Learn what age group you are most comfortable with. Don't think too highly of yourself. There is nothing wrong with saying, "I DON'T KNOW, but I'll find out for you."

What's the best thing about teaching?

The best thing about teaching is having influence on young minds. I got into teaching because I wanted my life to account for something. As a teacher I feel I have made a difference. Another fun thing about being a teacher is that I am always studying one of the things I love most, science.
