Distinguished Teacher Bret Lynes

What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?

he "art" of teaching lies within the subtleties of the profession; management, routines, humor, and humanity are all colors on the teacher's palette which can bring the "standards" to life. Methods courses provide a critical foundation but your individual artistry is developed over time. Therefore, use every opportunity to observe experienced teachers at different subjects and levels; glean the effective strategies and learn from the rest. Keep an open mind, try different strategies, take the time to review your effectiveness, and have fun; your students will learn more from you than the subject you teach.

What's the best thing about teaching?

Every day, class, and student provides a dynamic array of challenges, making the complexity of the task the best part of teaching. There are and will always be areas for student growth and success, as well as personal growth and satisfaction.
