What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?
The best advice I can give a new teacher in Special Education is that it is important to focus on communication and the independence of each student. We need to look at each student as a unique individual who has their own learning style. No matter what their abilities are, we need to have high expectations along with compassion and understanding. It is amazing to see students meet those expectations. I am sure that this is true for general education students as well.
What's the best thing about teaching?
The best thing about teaching is watching students grow and seeing that look in their eyes when they make that connection. One of my personal goals is to help my students be a part of the community. I know I have done my job when I see students generalize what they have learned in the classroom to the real world (the community/home).
