Make sure that you involve yourself in social activities on campus, both the student activities and the staff activities. I have found the relationships you build with general education students and your colleagues can help facilitate integrating your students successfully. The second piece of advice is to remind yourself it's about the students; they will teach you as much as you will teach them. At the end of the day it's not about the parents or paperwork, it's about helping the students be the best they can be.

The best thing about teaching is being present as students overcome their obstacles and go on to experience success. When you least expect it, they share with you their appreciation by letting you know that you were significant in helping them meet their goals.
