I think what it takes to be a good high school teacher is to know the subject matter. I think that’s important, but I think what’s more important is to stay in contact with the parents. To show respect to the student. I think that’s the big thing. If you show them respect, they will give you respect back. That and to be your personality. Just be you, don’t try to be somebody else. I know there are some teachers that are so wonderful outside of the classroom and when they walk through that door, they change, and I feel sorry for the teacher and for the students. If you can go in and have fun and laugh and joke around with them and then say, “Ok, let’s get to work,” the day just flies by. It’s a great job.
