It was serendipitous. It was my principal who was the one who asked me if I would be interested in being a teacher. For nine years I worked in a program with high-risk and at-risk students. I was an outreach consultant. We looked at issues that addressed why students were dropping out. That was when California was trying to address the drop-out situation. So I worked for nine years doing that. My principal called me and asked me if I had ever considered being a teacher. In three weeks he had me in the classroom. The first month I was like ‘I made a mistake!’ You know mainly why? Your time, and just the whole different kind of tenor to it. But then after that I just fell in love. You know, just fell in love with it. So that’s how I became a teacher: through my principal.
