I think the biggest challenge for a social studies teacher is the classic dilemma that any classroom teacher has, and that is the breadth of students that you have. You have students that are all over the spectrum with regards to ability, and you’ve got to bring that together and make lessons work for your class of 36 or whatever you happen to have that day, or students that have missed two days and come back and you’ve got to try to get them up to speed. I think that the real challenge is honoring and addressing what the guidelines are that have been given to teachers with regards to standards and components of those standards and teaching those elements, but also reaching a broad range of your students and trying to provide lesson plans that work for a lot of students and will help them to be successful. I think that is absolutely the biggest challenge you face every day.
